Evidence of participation & old friends

Posted on November 9, 2025

I ran in the Silver Falls Half Marathon last weekend and a photo shows evidence of participation. Plus last night we went to a lovely house concert with our long time and former teaching pal, Tom Rawson and his wife, Ellen van der Hoeven. Look – it’s a couple of bald fellas! The cool thing about this race is you get to run behind two waterfalls in the canyon. The race was fun, save for the yellowjacket sting on my elbow . . .but even that wasn’t that bad . . . Bald is beautiful. Tom is a lovely guy, and a classic folk musician.

Surgical support, trail running and a birthday

Posted on October 13, 2025

My brother had to have a detached retina put back in place and to be honest, I admire his grit through this one. I learned more about eyes than I knew and learned more about my brother than I knew too. This required some trips up to Seattle to see him through and I managed to get in a few trail runs in the Issaquah Alps trails system, a set of trails just east of Seattle in the Cascade Mountain foothills. Plus running with my regular “Noon Group,” along with the recent trail race, the Rainbow Ridge 20k. My brother, pre-surgery under a wonderful warm air-filled blanket. Cozy and comfy is part of the prep! Tiger Mountain is part of the Issaquah Alps and…

Symmetry & Time

Posted on September 12, 2025

Symmetry: The baseball season is ending around here as is the heat of summer. Baseball has a symmetry to it: 9 innings, 3 outs per half inning, 3 sets of 3 innings, 27 outs, 90 feet between bases. A lazy, easy, relaxed nature where the players don’t conquer space but work to “go home.” A game where the defense starts with the ball; where tension and release is built in on every pitch. It’s a beautiful game, really. Time: Taking a day out to run over ten miles in the woods around waterfalls with a friend you’ve known for over 40 years is a good way to spend time. I hope everyone has the blessing of a friendship that lasts a good long time.…

June = graduation, running, & family

Posted on June 13, 2025

June has struck! We have a graduate and I’ve been running a good bit lately in a local trail series. This will come to an end near the end of the month as travel ensues for a bit. Jonah graduated from South Eugene High School last week! It was a good ceremony and now summer is here . . . My brother, Jonah’s Uncle Larry, came down from Seattle for the events. It was good to have him with us for these several days. I’ve been running in the Emerald City Trail Series again this year up on and near Mt. Pisgah. The races are on Thursday evenings, with distances as short as 3.7 miles and as long as 8 miles. Once again, they…

Chuckanut 50k & Bellingham, Washington

Posted on March 17, 2025

This weekend I ran the race. The Chuckanut 50k trail race in Bellingham, Washington. Bellingham is also where I attended college in the mid-1980s and this trip gave me a chance to look backwards a bit. I stopped by two houses I once lived in and ate at a couple of restaurants that I used to frequent as a college student. The race itself was really something else as the conditions were just so bad. Ankle deep mud, wind, sleet snow, and a bunch of trail runners all scampering along to the finish. Photos include evidence of participation and the places I once lived. Well I looked into a house I once lived inAround the time I first went on my ownWhen the roads…
