McKenzie River Trail

Posted on October 19, 2026

Spent most of yesterday in the mountains just east of Eugene, on a trail run along the McKenzie River Trail and around Clear Lake. I’ve been going to Clear Lake for years now and find it a beautiful place, nestled among the lava flows, a few giant sequoias and many vine maple trees. Yesterday was simply beautiful. Photos below. The trail itself is a trail along a “National Wild and Scenic River,” the McKenzie River and the trail parallels the river for most of it. It starts just north of Clear Lake and my goal was to run from the parking lot, around Clear Lake, and back. This is the bridge at the start of the run that goes across a dry creek bed.…

Rainbow Ridge 20k & 50k

Yesterday I volunteered at the Rainbow Ridge 20k & 50k Trail Run which took place up the McKenzie River about a two hour drive from home. The runners endured the beautiful trails and worked so hard at this . . . it was impressive. Photos below: I stopped at a boat launch to use a forest service restroom and took this photo. In the distance is remnants of the wildfire from 2020 known as the Holiday Farm Fire. It was huge and caused a lot of damage. Six years on, though, and nature is returning. What I Talk About When I Talk About Running ~ Haruki Murakami

In this case I talk about being injured, unfortunately. But it happens. I also talk about attending the NCAA National Championship Track & Field Meet at Historic Hayward Field, which also happens. Both are enlightening. Running early Tuesday morning with the Big Timber Running Club that I am a part of I rolled my ankle. I felt the “click,” felt the pain and might have even heard the “click.” We were out on the trails at Mt. Pisgah and I was not watching where to place my feet when it happened. Turns out I have a fractured lateral malleolus (for those curious). Basically I fractured the bone that is the outer bone of the ankle. Yes, it hurts. Tomorrow I go to the local…

February – the short month

Posted on February 14, 2026

I can’t really start this off without acknowledging the intensity with which so many of us live at the moment. Things are just not easy nor understandable, really. I bury my head in the sand, in my days, in the people I interact with and just do my best at what Vonnegut said in a baptism speech he once gave: Though I have said we have had little rain there was a day where we got some. This stream bubbled up on one of my runs along the Ridgeline Trail near home. It was a nice sight! From the same run – up and over the hills . . . . Update my Now Page as well . . .
