EOM (End of Month)

Posted on October 29, 2023

October flew by it seems. I updated my Now page with bullets of some relevant items. A lot happens and is happening: teens, friends, runs, family. All with worry and concern, grief, love, attention, poetry, and prose. I hold it all in my heart these days. Some recent photos below: It was 25 degrees F when we all met up for our run this morning. I’ve missed this group, the Noon Group as we are called. Some of them have been with this group for 50 years, some 30. Me? 6. I’m just a kid. Our weekly Saturday run takes us over the Autzen Footbridge, which connects the UO main campus to the football, soccer, and baseball stadium areas. The river’s warmer-than-air-water was transitioning…

Timberjack 50k Trail Run

Posted on October 15, 2023

Yesterday I ran my second 50k trail race, this one being over near Bend, Oregon close to the Three Sisters Mountains. It was a long and generally speaking beautiful day. The running part was challenging for me, especially after mile 23. I figured it would be difficult, but not that difficult. Of course once you start one of these things you can’t really stop in the middle so I just kept going. Photos with some commentary below: The milling around before the race starts. This is always a strange time with everyone showing up, training completed, often goals in mind, some people know one another, but many don’t. It’s a nice time to say hello to a stranger, ask where they are from and…

Back to school!

Posted on September 8, 2023

Both Jonah and Nora headed to their prospective schools this week. One late and one early. One less than excited and the other overly so. Late afternoons I often take a short walk and sit near Hayward Field to do a bit of reading. Blue sky, green field and silver skin over the top. It is a lovely start to Fall here in Eugene.

Astronomical Delights & other items

Posted on July 18, 2023

Jonah and I went to the Pine Mountain Observatory last Friday evening for one of their summer season star gazing events and it was just incredible. Jonah has been into astronomy for a long time so this was a treat for us to do together. The next night we went to the Eugene Astronomy Society’s annual Star Party which was also fun and quite different (think: more people, more telescopes, longer lines, but still great). Photos below. These are two of the observatory domes that house telescopes. We were there well before dark, so we had a chance to look around, plus see a fantastic sunset over the Sisters Mountains to our west. From the top of Pine Mountain, which sits at 6300 feet…

&c.

Posted on July 9, 2023

A couple from the past couple of days. Sunny days punctuated with / by activity. The green tunnel on Pre’s Trail (named after the iconic runner, Steve Prefontaine). This is on my usual route on my noon runs and this time of year provides welcome shade on warmer days. I met one of, if not the, main writer for New Gen Track and Field recently while on a break on campus. Matt is a nice fella, a runner (he ran in the USATF Championships on Thursday evening in the 1500 meter prelims) and publishes this magazine. Friday night the group was hosting a party at the “Hoka House,” so I went, mainly to get a magazine as they were giving out this issue for…
