A couple from the past couple of days. Sunny days punctuated with / by activity. The green tunnel on Pre’s Trail (named after the iconic runner, Steve Prefontaine). This is on my usual route on my noon runs and this time of year provides welcome shade on warmer days. I met one of, if not the, main writer for New Gen Track and Field recently while on a break on campus. Matt is a nice fella, a runner (he ran in the USATF Championships on Thursday evening in the 1500 meter prelims) and publishes this magazine. Friday night the group was hosting a party at the “Hoka House,” so I went, mainly to get a magazine as they were giving out this issue for…

Permits and Poets

Posted on April 4, 2023

Today: logged into recreation.gov to get the permit for our annual backpacking trip this summer. They became available this morning at 7:00 am where they release 60% of them now and then start releasing the remainders on a 7 day rolling average. Permits are good, I think. It puts some friction into the process of getting into the backcountry and limits overuse. Tonight I participated / listened to a Substack Zoom call by poet and writer, Sherman Alexie. I have always enjoyed his work and it was a treat to be in a room with a few of his friends and fans to listen to him read and talk about his work. We are heading in during the heat of the summer, but hopefully…

Seattle/Bellevue Travel & Robots

Posted on March 27, 2023

This post has more photos than usual, all taken with the trusty orange GM-1. The bridge that crosses the Columbia River is one that I have been traversing since I was a kid and we would come from Seattle to visit my grandmother in Portland. When we were little we nicknamed this “Goofy Grandma’s Bridge,” after her. It still stands and still works, though there is talk of a different one taking its place one day. The town I grew up in, Bellevue, was transformed by the high-tech industry with Microsoft’s campus being just one town over. Now it is a reflective town that I do not recognize anymore, for the most part. Then Robots – Jonah’s South Eugene Robotics Team was in competition…

Looking Into You

Posted on March 22, 2023

Well, I looked into a house I once lived inAround the time I first went on my ownWhen the roads were as many as the places I had dreamed ofAnd my friends and I were oneNow the distance is done and the search has begunI’ve come to see where my beginnings have gone~ Looking Into You, by Jackson Browne I drove north to Seattle this past weekend to help my stepmom with removing some furniture from her new apartment she now shares with her new husband. During the drive up I stopped off at the house I lived in from the time I was a year or two years old until about 9, when I moved from my Mom’s house to live with my…

Yellowstone: 151 Years Old

Posted on March 1, 2023

Today marks the 151st anniversary of Yellowstone National Park becoming a national park. It was the first & is one of the most spectacular places (in my opinion). My opinion is, of course, very biased as I spent four summers in the early 80s during my college years working there (quick math tells me it was 39 years ago now . . !). Living in a place is significant and especially when it is one of the first places you live after leaving home. So today I had on my one of my monitors the livestream from the Old Faithful area webcam, as seen in the image below. I’ve also been reading and we’ve had some snow that has been beautiful to watch as…
