Been much too long . . .

Posted on May 26, 2023

It has been over a month since I updated my site, which is not what I intended to do when I revived it a few months ago. However, life has been, as can be seen in this post, full. Here we go: Sara won an award! I am fairly quiet in terms of my spouse, Sara, but this one, to me, deserves a shout-out. She was the recipient of the 2023 Nursing Excellence award in the “Innovator” category. She has a detailed way of thinking about things and noticed processes that could be improved in terms of the day-to-day work that she does as a nurse at the local hospital. These are being implemented across the hospitals in the system and she was nominated…

Permits and Poets

Posted on April 4, 2023

Today: logged into recreation.gov to get the permit for our annual backpacking trip this summer. They became available this morning at 7:00 am where they release 60% of them now and then start releasing the remainders on a 7 day rolling average. Permits are good, I think. We are heading in during the heat of the summer, but hopefully…

Thanks to Google Books, the image of this issue of Boy’s Life showed up. He is mentioned in the article on working with scouts doing trail restoration during the summer of 1948. He was 19 years old. I pretty much know the location of this trail work as well, though I plan to visit it proper this summer. I found a copy of the original on eBay for about fifteen bucks. Aside: The ads in the magazine are quite fascinating to look at and read.…

Pamelia Lake & Grizzly Peak

Posted on August 5, 2019

Below are some images from the Jefferson Wilderness Area, formerly just Jefferson National Forest. My daughter and I hiked here this past weekend to see where my father worked as a fire lookout back in the summer of 1947. He is in the top left photo and his cabin and the lake are also there, too. The cabin and the lookout that was at the top of Grizzly Peak are no longer there, but the area looks very much the same as when he was there 76 years ago.
