Smoke on the Water & Paul

Posted on October 25, 2026

On Saturdays I meet up with the UO Noon Running Group, which really does not meet at noon anymore as most of the runners are retired now. However, we do meet up on Saturday and have a route that takes us over the Autzen Footbridge across the Willamette River. On this run yesterday, the fog atop the water was beautiful as the rising sun captured it. I also walked, instead of run, as my knees have been giving me some challenges lately. I walked with Paul Slovic, the founder of the group (from back in 1969!) and our elder runner (he’s 88). Plus walking with Paul is great as I get to talk with him and listen as we try to solve the world’s…

Dellinger Cross Country Meet

Posted on October 9, 2026

I went to the Bill Dellinger Cross Country Meet today – the 20th year of this one. I’ve been the past two years as well as it is held on a golf course in Springfield, the next town over. Side note: Springfield, Oregon is *that* Springfield from the The Simpsons, according to the creator, Matt Groening. I took some photos today and these are a few of my favorites: The Chico State Women doing a motivational dance before they ran their 6k race. Connor Thompson, brother of former UO runner Anika Thompson floating along, running hard. Near the finish, a runner from Weber State with all of the grit on her face. What an effort at the end! Connor Burns in first, and Simeon…

Fall 2026

Posted on September 20, 2026

I’ve been recovering from my running injury that I got this past June and I got out for two easy miles this morning in the lovely fog. It is feeling like Fall even though we are close to 80 degrees on some days. Updated my Now page as well. A ground web showing itself. The Japanese maple tree in our backyard is turning a bit. Across the field.

The Good Rain*

Posted on September 4, 2026

It is back and it is always good. My rain boot from my bike commute yesterday. I bike to work each day with the exception of three instances: when there is ice, snow or wildfire smoke. Fortunately there was not yesterday and the ride was beautiful. Rain here does not dump most of the time, which makes it all manageable. In addition, this rain is actually very early for us as it typically does not begin until mid to late September. We need it though as it stopped raining in June this year and even though we are known for having a lot of rain, during the summer months the Pacific Northwest is one of the dryest areas of the country. *this is from…

Early July covers some things . . .

Posted on July 7, 2026

A lot has happened in early July: we attended the Savanah Bananas baseball entertainment event, went to the Prefontaine Classic Track Meet, volunteered at the Butte-To-Butte run and saw an impressive drone show following the first night of the track meet. The Savanah Bananas were, to my mind, meant to be akin to the Harlem Globetrotters basketball, but with baseball as the sport. It was “played” in the football stadium as well and it was loud . . . 90 decibals for most of the event. Was it worth it? Personally I don’t think so, but it was different and there was some fun in that. I’ve been working on my omelets lately, including the one above with bok choy, blue cheese and a…
